Arbiter Insights

Feature

Arbiter continuously analyzes your decisions in the background, detecting patterns, conflicts, and opportunities for improvement.

What is Arbiter?

Arbiter is Arbtr's AI assistant that runs in the background, analyzing your decision graph for patterns and potential issues. When it finds something noteworthy, it creates an "insight" that appears in your decision view.

Think of Arbiter as a tireless architecture reviewer that's always watching for things you might miss.

Types of Insights

Similar Decision

Arbiter found another decision that seems related to this one. You might want to create a relationship between them.

Potential Conflict

Two decisions seem to contradict each other. This may need resolution.

Similar Argument

An argument in another decision makes a similar point. You might want to link them or reuse the evidence.

Action: Click to link arguments or view the similar content

Comment Promotion

A comment contains substantive content that would work better as a formal argument.

Action: Click to promote the comment to an argument

Ripple Effect

A decision's status changed, which may affect dependent decisions upstream or downstream in the graph.

Action: Review affected decisions and update their status if needed

Code Discovery

A merged PR introduced a new dependency that doesn't have a backing decision. Arbiter automatically created a draft decision for review.

Action: Review the draft decision and publish or dismiss

Viewing Insights

Insights appear in several places:

  • Taskbar (bottom of screen): Shows pending insights as compact pills you can click to expand
  • Inline indicators: Sparkle icons appear next to arguments and comments that have associated insights
  • Gutter highlighting: A glowing border on the left side of entities with pending insights

Click an insight pill to expand the full card with details and actions.

Real-time Notifications

When new insights arrive, Arbtr makes sure you notice them:

  • Toast notification: A brief popup appears in the corner announcing the new insight
  • Pulsing glow: New insight pills in the taskbar have a color-coded pulsing border that matches the insight type (e.g., fuchsia for Code Discovery, red for Conflicts)
  • Seen tracking: The glow continues until you click the insight, making it easy to spot which ones are new

Acting on Insights

Each insight card has action buttons based on its type:

  • Create Relationship: Adds the suggested relationship to the graph
  • Link Arguments: Connects related arguments together
  • Promote to Argument: Converts a comment to a formal argument
  • Dismiss: Removes the insight if it's not relevant

When you take action on an insight, it's marked as resolved and removed from your pending list.

Ask Arbtr

Not sure about an insight? Click "Ask Arbtr" to open a conversation with the AI. You can ask questions like:

  • "Why do you think these decisions conflict?"
  • "What would be the impact of linking these?"
  • "Can you explain the similarity you detected?"

Arbtr will provide context and reasoning to help you make an informed decision about the insight.

When Insights are Generated

Arbiter runs analysis in the background when:

  • A new decision is created
  • A decision's status changes
  • New arguments are added
  • Significant edits are made

New insights appear via real-time notifications, so you don't need to refresh the page.
